XMLHttpRequest: Meeting this Month
By Dana | June 2, 2005
XMLHTTP is a set of APIs that can be used by JavaScript, JScript, VBScript and other web browser scripting languages to transfer XML or other data to and from a web server using HTTP. The biggest advantage of XMLHTTP is the ability to dynamically update a webpage without reloading the entire webpage or using software plugins. It is used by many websites to implement responsive and dynamic web applications. Examples of XMLHTTP applications include Google’s Gmail service and Google Suggest dynamic lookup interface. XMLHTTP is an important component in the “AJAX” web development technique.
If you’re interested in this topic, please stop by our next WSG meeting in the Science Library, Room 122 (first floor) on Thursday, June 9th. Chris Kim will be teaching us about it.
Please sign up for the session here.

Colorzilla - Extension for Firefox
By Dana | May 18, 2005
I just installed Colorzilla on Firefox today. It’s amazing, and definitely useful to any web designer.
ColorZilla is an extension for Mozilla Firefox and the Mozilla Suite. It assists web developers and graphic designers with color related tasks - both basic and advanced.
With ColorZilla you can get a color reading from any point in your browser, quickly adjust this color and paste it into another program. You can Zoom the page you are viewing and measure distances between any two points on the page. The built-in palette browser allows choosing colors from pre-defined color sets and saving the most used colors in custom palettes. DOM spying features allow getting various information about DOM elements quickly and easily. And there’s more…

Meeting Cancelled this Month
By Dana | May 10, 2005
We have had no volunteers to do a session for us this week.
This lack has indicated to us that maybe people are feeling a just a little swamped right now. So, we will cancel this months meeting, and resume next month when…
Chris Kim has volunteered to teach us about “XMLHttpRequest”. This is, apparently, “the latest technology that combines javascript, server languages, and databases.”
For more info:
-Apple.com
-XML.com
-Sourceforge Wiki
Hope to see you there, we will send out a reminder. We are thinking that it will be time to go back to Thursday Afternoons, so plan on June 9th.

Firefox Vulnerabilities
By Albert Morita | May 9, 2005
Two extremely critical vulnerabilities have been discovered in Firefox, which can be exploited by malicious people to conduct cross-site scripting attacks and compromise a user’s system.
Software version(s): Mozilla Firefox 1.x
A patch is still being developed to fix these vulnerabilities. Until then, it is advised to:
1) Disable JavaScript.
2) Disable software installation: Options –> Web Features –> “Allow web sites to install software”
For more information, visit: http://secunia.com/advisories/15292/
Update 5/12/2005: Patched version is now available:
